This week the world of Christianity was rocked when news broke about the controversy around the song ‘healer.’  Yesterday the Australian newspaper Adelaide reported that Michael Guglielmucci has made a statement about the song ‘healer’ and his battle with cancer.  Here is a clip of the article;

During the last two years we have experienced the favor of God, his love and grace, and also the constant pain of the possibility of losing a son.

On Tuesday 12th of August we received a call to come and meet with Mike and Amanda but weren’t ready for what we were about to hear. Mike began to share how he has lived a lie for the last 16 years of his life because of addictive behavior he couldn’t break free from.

He loved God and would throw himself into prayer, worship, and serving God with full energy and enthusiasm but still couldn’t break free.

Man my heart goes out to him, his family and their church.  While this saddens me and even upsets me the truth is this: NONE of us are are too good or too perfect to do the same thing.  If given the right opportunity we would all stumble as well.  I think there is great caution in judging people when we hear stories like this.  True the Bible calls us to hold each other accountable but the Bible also calls us to restore them gently.  That when we rebuke a fellow believer it is for the purpose of restoration.  Galatians 6:1-3 says this,

“Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.”

As this verse implies we have to take caution when bringing someone back to restoration when they are caught in sin because we may also fall.  I am reminded of Chris Tomlin’s song “Kindness”;

It’s Your Kindness Lord that brings us to repentance

Your favor Lord is our desire

It’s Your beauty Lord that makes me stand in silence

Your love – Your love is better than life

It is HIS kindness that brings ut to repentace.

I hope and pray that those around Mike are helping to restore him.
