I have been reading through Hebrews a lot lately. We are actually studying it in our high school Sunday School class right now. So I have been spending an ample amount of time reading and re-reading the book of Hebrews. I am always amazed at how things, truths really, jump off the page at us as we read through Scripture. It has been one of my greatest joys to see students start to grasp the truths we find in Scripture. I am sure it pleases God far more. This past week we were in Hebrews Chapter 9 and we were talking about the earthly tabernacle, the order of the tabernacle, and the sacrifices that took place in the tabernacle. There is some great detail involved in describing everything in Chapter 9. The tent is prepared; the lamp stand has its own place. The articles in the first section are set in a certain way and the Arc of the Covenant is placed in the second section. The priests could enter the first section but only the high priests were allowed to enter into the second section. I have always wondered why God cares so much about detail and order. I also think passages like this are where we get the stigma that God is unapproachable. Or that he is some stiff old man waiting to judge us and pounce on our every move. The thing we often forget is that in verses 1-10 were describing the old covenant. The covenant of the Old Testament where it was required of the high priests to sacrifice a bull for the sins of himself and a lamb for the purification for the sins of the people.

You know what is really comforting to me? Hebrews 9:11-28. They describe the new covenant. That Jesus Christ is now our high priest, our mediator, between us and God. This is a good thing for us. So what is this new covenant? It comes from Jesus Christ dying on the cross for our sins. His blood was shed so we could be free from sin. I do not know about you but this brings me great comfort and hope. To know that we no longer live under the old covenant but we are now under the new one is a tremendous blessing for us. I love verses 24-28,

“For Christ did not enter a man-made sanctuary that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence. Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.”

This is such an awesome and life transforming truth.

Now if we can just grasp it and live it.
